Notre Dame fares well at tennis state championship tourney

NEW ORLEANS – Notre Dame’s tennis teams recently competed in the LHSAA Division III State Tennis Championships at the University Tennis Center on the campus of UNO and the City Park Tennis Center.

The Pioneers qualified seven boys and seven girls out of a possible eight on the strength of runner-up finishes at the Region II competition held the previous week at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux.

In boys’ singles, Steven Dupuis drew a first round bye before meeting Bunkie’s Taylor Tassin in the round of 16. Dupuis cruised to an easy 6-1; 6-1 victory to secure two team points for the Pios. In the quarterfinal round, Dupuis fell to Region II champion and eventual state runner up Daniel Populus of Parkview Baptist 6-0; 6-1.

All three of the Pio boys’ doubles teams qualified for state competition. Ryan Benson and Charlie Mayeux were seeded fifth and drew a first round bye. They topped Trevor David and Anil Oberoi of Eunice 6-1; 6-0 before dropping a quarterfinal matchup with Steven Fielkow and Robert Silverstein of Ben Franklin in split sets, 2-6; 6-2; 6-4.

Joe Schmid and Kyrick Pannell picked up one team point by besting Darion Percle and Aaron Populus of Parkview 6-4; 6-4. They lost to Patrick Roth and Benton Troxclair of E.D. White 7-6; 1-6; 6-2. Will Fruge’ and John Rothermel lost a first round matchup to Carl Rasmusson and Cameron Doles of Holy Cross 7-6; 7-5.

In girls’ singles competition, the Lady Pios were represented by regional semifinalist Kaitlin Prevost, who lost her first round matchup with Hassathorn Chalyanat of Avoyelles 6-0; 6-1.

In girls’ doubles, Region II champions Natalee Benson and Laura Schmid earned a number two seed and a first round bye. In the round of 16, they easily handled Raven Naquin and Taylor Bellow of Bunkie 6-0; 6-1. In the quarterfinals, they met Lauren Badeaux and Natalie Bernard of E.D. White in a rematch of a regional semifinal contest. Once again, Benson and Schmid prevailed over the Cardinal duo by a score of 6-4; 6-3. In the semifinals, they lost a close one to Taylor Rabalais and Katelyn Newton of Bunkie 6-4; 4-6; 6-2.

Seniors Tommie Anzalone and Caroline Nickel drew a first round bye before falling to eventual state champions Cappy Pitts and Tova Weiss of Ben Franklin 6-1; 6-4. Katie and Julie Reggie fell in the first round to top seeded Cornelia Dewitt and Sarah Willis of Bolton 6-0; 6-2.

The boys’ team title was taken by Loyola Prep of Shreveport with 15 points, followed by Parkview Baptist with seven and Bunkie with six. The Pioneers tied for fourth with Ben Franklin at five points each. Also scoring were Holy Cross with four points, E.D. White with three, Bolton with two, and Eunice with one. DeLasalle competed but failed to score.

The boys’ singles champion is Darren Thevenote of Bunkie, who defeated Daniel Populus of Parkview in the final 3-6; 6-4; 6-1. In the doubles title match Carter and Charlie Boyd of Loyola Prep defeated teammates Christian Spano and Ellis Deupree 7-5; 7-6.

The girls’ team champion is the Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans with 11 team points. Runner-up was Bunkie with seven points followed by E.D. White and Ben Franklin with five each and Bolton with four. The Lady Pios tied for sixth with Berwick at three points each. Rayville had one point and Parkview failed to score.

Caroline Brinson of Sacred Heart easily repeated as singles champion, defeating teammate Nicole Reub in the final 6-0; 6-2. The doubles title was captured by Cappy Pitts and Tova Weiss, who defeated Taylor Rabalais and Katelyn Newton of Bunkie in the final 6-3; 3-6; 7-5.
