Kelli Joseph, a K-8 principal at Garyville-Mont Airy Math and Science Magnet School in St. John the Baptist Parish, will take the helm, replacing current Superintendent Daisy Slan, whose contract with the board terminates in the latter part of June.
The decision came after the board narrowed its decision down to three candidates during a special meeting on April 30 - Joseph, Camicia Smith-Ross, and Lionel Jackson.
Smith is the Upward Bound director at Dillard University in New Orleans and Jackson is the assistant Superintendent of the Tangipahoa Parish School Board.
First on the new superintendent’s agenda will be the formulation and presentation of a plan for financial recovery for the long-troubled school system.
The board is expected to present this plan to the state’s Fiscal Review Committee on May 25. Due to the appointment of a new superintendent, the board has voted to ask the state for an additional 30 days in which to fine tune their plan.
Additionally, she will face the task of improving test scores to prevent the state’s takeover of the only elementary and high schools in the parish. The state’s recovery School District is currently running the Middle School.
