VILLE PLATTE – A second parent within a week has been charged after leaving children unattended in a parked vehicle while she shopped.

According to Police Chief Neal Lartigue, officers responding to a complaint of an unattended child in a vehicle on Monday discovered two children, ages three and six, in the back seat without proper restraints.

Video surveillance tape at the store where the vehicle was parked showed Lashonda Monique Wilson, 29, of Ville Platte entering the store.

She was charged with leaving her children unattended in a motor vehicle, criminal abandonment, two counts of no child restraint and having a broken tail light on her vehicle.

Lartugie noted the danger of leaving a child in a vehicle in the summer heat, as well as the possibility of a child putting a car into gear while the engine is running.

The outside temperature was more than 90 degrees Monday.
