AMITE – Plaintiffs are asking a federal judge to order the Tangipahoa Parish School Board to implement a desegregation plan approved by the court before voters rejected a $187 million tax proposal to finance it.

Plaintiffs filed a motion in U.S. District Court in New Orleans on June 24 claiming the board has the money available to put the plan into effect.

The school system says that’s not so.

In April voters overwhelmingly said no to four tax proposals to fund five new schools and overhaul another 30.

In May, U.S. Dist. Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle instructed the two sides to huddle and address the issues.

Parties to those talks indicate a compromise might be in the offing.
