After falling just short of Most Valuable Player honors in volleyball and basketball during her senior year, the multi-talented athlete garnered top honors on the 2011 All-Acadia Parish softball team that was released today by the Crowley Post-Signal.
And,as in volleyball, it was a tight race in the MVP selection process.
Simon was edged out for top honors in volleyball by teammate Mayme Cook and in basketball by Iota standout Allison Baggett.
In softball, Simon nudged out Rayne’s Mariel Meche for MVP honors.
“Taylor was our leadoff hitter and she really set the tone for the game,” said ND coach Lauren Delahoussaye, who earned Coach of the Year honors. “She was a very strong presence.
“I know other teams were scared of her and felt that if they could keep her off the bases, they could beat us. It was just hard for those teams to do that. She hit anything they threw her; she did a really good job of handling pressure situations.”
Simon led the Lady Pios, who reached the Class AAA quarterfinals in 2011, in nearly every offensive category. The LSU-Eunice signee hit .517 on the season with seven doubles, four triples, two home runs, 37 runs scored and 14 RBI.
Meche was just as impressive and made the squad at pitcher. The senior hurler helped lead the Lady Wolves to the quarterfinals where they were eliminated from the playoffs by eventual state champion Catholic High of New Iberia.
Meche logged a record of 17-9 and had a 1.18 earned run average. She also hit .393 for the Lady Wolves with six home runs and 25 RBI.
Simon and Meche were also first-team selections on the 5-AAA All-District team as well as the Class AAA All-State team.
Meche is joined on the team’s pitching staff by Notre Dame senior Amelia Lavergne (4-2), Crowley High sophomore Olivia Boullion (7-3), Iota freshman Abigail Leonards (1.73 ERA) and Church Point junior Hannah Benoit (6-1).
Simon is joined on the infield by Notre Dame sophomore Katherine Kirsch (.500), Crowley sophomore Heather Trahan (.323) and Notre Dame sophomore Taylor Boulet (.417). The catcher is Church Point’s Robbie Dailey (.395).
The outfield consists of Crowley senior Maranda Guidry (.317), Notre Dame junior Charlotte Brown (.536), Rayne senior Tori Mott (.379) and Iota senior Laura Cart (.325).
Utility players making the team include Crowley sophomore Jessica Powell (.369), Rayne senior Kelsey Hollier (.533) and Church Point junior Hallie Lavergne (.436) and freshman Morgan Daigle (.421).
