Richard reported this week that she has been reunited with her son, Kevin Thomas of Eunice.
Richard said that although her attempts to open the adoption records were unsuccessful, she was able to learn her son’s initials through the adoption agency.
She posted the information on her Facebook page, where she has kept an ongoing account of her search, and within two minutes, Richard said she was contacted by a relative of her son, informing her of his name.
The following day, Calvin Thomas, her son’s adoptive father, called her at work and set up a family meeting.
Richard said she was told her son’s adoptive mother passed away three years ago, and that it was her last wish for him to find his birth mother.
“I could have been rejected; it happens in many adoption cases, but I wasn’t. It was a blessing,” Richard said.
Richard said she and her other children met with Thomas and his family over the Independence Day weekend.
Richard said Calvin Thomas began playing the piano and everyone joined in to sing, “Amazing Grace”.
“It was an amazing, surreal event,” Richard said.
“My son and I were hugging for 15 minutes.”
Richard was brought together with her son over the Independence Day weekend.
Richard was 16 when she gave birth to Thomas, and was forced to put her son up for adoption by her parents.
After graduating college and marrying, she decided to look for her son, but the adoption records were sealed.
After several private investigators and years of searching produced no leads, Richard finally learned that her son was adopted by a couple in Eunice.
Richard ran an advertisement in the Eunice News asking for anyone with information to contact her.
Shortly thereafter, the Eunice News contacted Richard and reported on her story. Other media outlets picked up her quest.
