The Abbeville Police Department Tuesday morning released the name of the skeleton remains. They belong to Joseph Wayne Schexnider.
Today, June 26, would have been his 49th birthday.
Lt. David Hardy of the Abbeville Police Department said DNA results have come back from the FACE Lab in Baton Rouge and they confirmed it was Schexnider in the chimney.
When the skeleton remains were located, there was ID with Schexnider's name on it but the police were not going to release any name until they were 100 percent sure it was Schexnider. On Monday they became 100 percent sure when DNA matched that of Schexnider's.
Hardy has spoken with Schexnider's mother and his family when the skeleton was located two months ago.
She told police her son had been missing since 1984. The police also learned a warrant was issued for Schexnider by the Sheriff's Office in 1984.
She recently told police that she thought her son was on the run from the Sheriff's Office, which is why she never filed a missing person's report with the police.
The mother also informed the Abbeville Police that she did not want to talk to the media about her son, so they did not release her name or where she lives.
The remains of Schexnider were found when the bank started renovations in early May. When a contractor opened a sealed door of a chimney on the second floor, Schexnider's skeletal remains fell out.
Hardy said he did not want to speculate as to what was Schexnider doing in the chimney because he does not know.
Gloves, a lighter, a watch (not working), a comb and a cigarette case were located in the chimney.
Hardy said the case is closed because it does not look like any foul play took place.
