This week’s Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest should be interesting once again with a number of key matchups on both the prep and college level.

The most intriguing games in high school could be the rivalry game pitting Notre Dame against Teurlings while the Barbe-Evangel and the Calvary-Carencro matchups should provide a lot of fireworks as well.

In college action, LSU-Misissippi State should be interesting, although most Tiger fans will tell you different. Also, you have Ohio State at Miami and Oklahoma at Florida State, two more games that could possibly throw a wrench in some contestant’s win-loss column.

You never know, but it’s Week 3 and it’s time for some upsets to come through.

I would be surprised, although it’s happened before, if anyone matches Todd Lormand, Irvin Schexnider and Larry McAtee’s feat of just three losses a week ago.

Lormand was the winner and Schexnider was second by virtue of the tiebreaker.

Better luck this week, Larry.

As for myself, I also missed just three games after taking big hits with the Crowley and Iota losses. Won’t make that mistake again.

Now on to the picks.

Prep Football

Notre Dame over Teurlings – Before the season started, I thought this might be Teurlings’ year to knock off the Pios. However, after Notre Dame’s performance last week against Breaux Bridge, I think the Rebels will have to wait another year or so to get that elusive victory over a Lewis Cook-coached squad.

Washington-Marion over Crowley – It pains me to make this pick, but I just don’t think the Gents are quite ready for these higher classified teams. Washington-Marion won just two games last year, but that means nothing. Comeaux won just one in 2010, but you wouldn’t have known that by their play against the Gents last week.

Lake Arthur over Iota – Iota is struggling and I don’t think it will get much better this week. Lake Arthur returns a running back that torched the Bulldogs last year and the Tigers’ are averaging 35 points a game.

Rayne over Abbeville – I think I’ve mentioned that I watched Abbeville play in the jamboree. A total rebuilding year for the Cats.

Cecilia over Church Point – My gut tells me Church Point, but a few people I’ve talked to tell me otherwise.

Acadiana over New Iberia – Rams let one slip away against St. Paul last week. It won’t happen again.

Evangel over Barbe – Yeah, Evangel is 0-2. But they lost to Oklahoma’s best team (Union) and one of Mississippi’s best teams (Lafayette).

Carencro over Calvary Baptist - Coach Brent Indest has some talent at Carencro. And he’s the most dangerous coach I know when he has talented skill players.

Parkview over Redemptorist – The rivalry has lost its luster. Yeah, Parkview lost their quarterback and running back to injury. But Redemptorist is down to like 20 players on the roster. This one won’t even be close.

Patterson over St. James – St. James isn’t what it used to be and Patterson is, well, Patterson. Best of luck, even though it’s not needed, coach (Mark) Millet.

John Curtis over East St. John – When does J.T. Curtis ever lose in the regular season?

Gueydan over North Central – I’m going out on a limb here. But Trevor Derouen is the real deal. If he’s healthy, the Bears have a shot.

College Picks

Texas over UCLA – UCLA has already lost to the arguably the third best team in the state of Texas (Houston). I really don’t see the Bruins faring much better against the Longhorns.

Nebraska over Washington – Both teams have put up big numbers against less than quality opponents. This one is a toss up.

Miami over Ohio State –Another tossup. Toledo gave Ohio State all it could handle last week. Miami lost to Maryland in its opener. Could go either way. I’m just going with the home team on this one.

UL-Lafayette over Nicholls – After that performance last week, how can I go against the Cajuns?

LSU over Mississippi State – From last night: It could have been a great game or could be a blowout. You know by now. The Tigers have won the last 11 meetings and own a 68-33-3 advantage in the series. Plus, I said I was sticking with LSU after they beat Oregon .

Florida over Tennessee – I have a feeling this will be a high-scoring game with a ton of big plays. But it’s tough to beat the Gators in the Swamp.

Florida State over Oklahoma – I haven’t seen either team play, but I can’t bring myself to pick the Sooners in a big game. I may be wrong but Big 12 teams that end up at or near the top of the polls early in the season are usually vastly overrated.

Boston College over Duke – Going with the oddsmakers on this one. BC is a seven-point favorite.
