RUSTON – Residents returned to their homes early Wednesday in the vicinity of Sunday’s KCS train derailment.

No injuries were reported in the derailment on U.S. 80 near the Lincoln-Ouachita Parish line.

The cleanup is still on going and parts of U.S. 80 remain closed and some residents are not allowed back as yet.

Maj. Stephen Williams with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office said there were two railroad cars carrying hazardous material involved though leakage was not evident.

KCS spokeswoman Doniele Carlson said 32 cars of the 123-car KCS mixed freight train derailed. The train was heading to Shreveport from Artesia, Miss.

The derailment occurred around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. First responders evacuated numerous homes in the area of U.S. 80 near Sims Road in Lincoln Parish following the train derailment.

In November 2007, many residents in the same area were evacuated and several roads closed when 11 railcars of a westbound KCS train left the track just west of a trestle near Sims Road in Lincoln Parish.
