Starting in the immediate area, the Crowley Gents and the Notre Dame Pioneers face off against two pass-happy squads in Teurlings and Catholic High of New Iberia, respectively.
Rayne also faces a tough test when the Wolves travel to South Beauregard while Iota travels to Oberlin and Church Point hosts Erath.
Last week I predicted that the locals would fare well, but, boy, was I wrong.
Notre Dame dropped a heartbreaking 9-6 overtime loss at St. Louis ; Iota lost a thrilling 30-28 contest to South Beauregard and Church Point also suffered its first defeat, falling to Catholic of New Iberia, 29-13.
Hopefully the area teams can right the ship this week.
As far as the Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest, Greg Monceaux earned top honors by missing just four games. Summar Leleux made the leaderboard for the second straight week, claiming second place honors by virtue of the tiebreaker with five losses.
I wasn’t as fortunate, missing seven games.
Now on to this week’s picks.
High School Football
Teurlings over Crowley – As much as I hope I’m wrong on this one, I have to take Teurlings. The Rebels have proved that they can put points on the board in bunches. A shootout doesn’t favor Crowley this year.
Rayne over South Beauregard – Entering the season, I thought this would be the first test for the Wolves. However, after seeing South Beauregard lose to Welsh and barely slip past Iota, Rayne should take this one with ease.
Oberlin over Iota – Looking back, Iota lost to Vinton while Oberlin beat them by two scores on the road. This one could be a toss up.
Vermilion Catholic over Dunham – VC hasn’t exactly played a strong schedule, but they are averaging just over 42 points per game. That’s enough for me.
New Iberia over Westgate – Big rivalry game here. This one could go either way.
Notre Dame over Catholic-NI – If Notre Dame’s offense can get back on track, this one won’t be close. The Pios’ defense has been smothering for four weeks and I don’t expect that to change this week.
Church Point over Erath – Erath is rebuilding. Plus, the Bears’ loss last week will have them on the warpath.
Northwest over Mamou – Two struggling football teams. I flipped a coin.
Jennings over Ferriday – Ferriday is a tough place to play, but Jennings seems to be the real deal this year. If they are truly a Top 10 team, they should have no problem in this one.
Oakdale over Jena – Oakdale is 1-3, but they have lost to some very good teams. Jena is 2-2, but they only looked good against the less than average teams.
St. Martinville over Opelousas – Battle of the Tigers. Opelousas just isn’t there yet.
LSU over Kentucky – Can you say blowout?
Alabama over Florida – The Gators always play tough in the Swamp. But this is Bama baby.
ULL over FAU – Cajuns are on a roll and Cajun Field will be packed. No way they lose this one.
Michigan over Minnesota – Another home game for the Wolverines equals another victory.
South Carolina over Auburn – South Carolina at home and favored by 10. I’ll take that.
Wisconsin over Nebraska – As much as I like Bo Pelini, I can’t take the Huskers in this one. The Badgers are the best team in the Big 10.
Ohio State over Michigan State – The Spartans are 3-1, but they haven’t really played anyone except Notre Dame. This will be their first of two straight beat downs. They have big brother Michigan next week.
Stanford over UCLA – The Cardinal has put up big numbers in their three games and this week will be no different. Better luck next year Bruins.
Texas A&M over Arkansas – Future SEC matchup. Both teams have something to prove after losing last week. Another one of those tossups.
