The Lady Dogs, who have compiled a 21-3 record while logging victories over Class B’s No. 1 Fairview; Class 3A’s No. 8 Abbeville, No. 9 Westlake, No. 11 Notre Dame and Class 4A’s No. 11 Teurlings and No. 12 DeRidder, got rewarded for their efforts this week when they garnered a No. 3 ranking in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s initial Class AA basketball poll announced Monday.
The Lady Dogs’ only losses have been to two Class 5A teams - No. 2 Lafayette High (twice) and Hahnville.
“It’s always nice to be recognized,” said Iota coach Stan Baggett. “The polls don’t mean everything, but it’s always nice to be in there. There’s no exact science in it so you don’t know exactly where you stand, but it’s better than being ranked 25.
“It’s nice to be recognized and it’s good for the kids. It’s basically something to talk about.”
John Curtis earned the No. 1 spot in 2A with a 19-1 record. The Lady Patriots earned nine of the 10 first place votes and came in with 119 points. University (20-2) entered the polls at No. 2 with one first place vote and 103 points. Iota (21-3) earned 101 points.
Iota is currently ranked No. 2 in the Kenramsey.com and the LHSAA power ratings system behind John Curtis.
“We’ve had a pretty good first half of the season,” said Baggett. “I didn’t exactly think we would be 21-3 at this point, but I thought we’d be pretty good. With all these seniors coming back mixed with some good young kids that have come in. We’ve had some good quality wins and the kids are getting more and more confident every game.”
In Class 3A, the Notre Dame Lady Pios, state semifinalists in 2011, enter the first polls at No. 11 after a 14-9 start on the season.
Like the Lady Bulldogs, Notre Dame has also had to fight its way through a tough non-district slate.
Of Notre Dame’s nine losses, seven have been at the hands of teams ranked in the top 12 in their respective classes.
The Lady Pios have lost to Class A’s No. 3 Vermilion Catholic; Class 2A’s No. 3 Iota and No. 10 Winnfield; Class 4A’s No. 12 DeRidder and Class 5A’s No. 2 Lafayette, No. 6 West Monroe and No. 12 Sulphur.
“We would have liked to get a few more wins than we have, but we feel pretty good about where we are,” said Notre Dame coach Nolan Theriot. “I think we’re starting to move more in the right direction of where we need to be at this time of the year.”
St. James (16-4) earned the No. 1 spot in the Class 3A polls after logging seven first place votes and 116 total points. Loyola (20-3) comes in at No. 2 with two first place votes and 111 points and defending champion Avoyelles (16-2) is No. 3 with one first place vote and 96 points.
The Lady Pios are currently sitting at No. 8 in the LHSAA power ratings and No. 10 on Kenramsey.com.
