MONROE – Connor Goss’ two-out, two-run home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Notre Dame Pioneers slipped past Class 5A’s No. 2 ranked Zachary, 6-5, in the opening round of the West Monroe Tournament.

Gavin Bourgeois was credited with the victory on the mound after giving up no runs on no hits and one walk in one inning of work.

Nick Gossen earned the save, giving up no runs on one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

Bourgeois and Matt Venable each had two hits and one RBI in the victory. Clint Faul also had two hits.

Goss homered and drove in two runs, Gossen singled in one run and Hogan Guidry had a single.

The Pios rounded out the tournament with two games Saturday but results of those contests were not available at press time.
