The senior catcher/pitcher tossed a no-hitter through seven innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI in a 9-0 victory over Avoyelles in the Gents’ final game of the Westminster Tournament.
“Out of his five appearances this year, this was without a doubt his (Deshotel) best outing on the mound,” said CHS coach Christian Doughty, whose squad improved to 5-8 overall. “He wasn’t overpowering but he threw strikes and the defense played well behind him.”
Crowley’s defense was equally impressive. After struggling defensively in their previous 12 games, Saturday’s contest was the first in which the Gents played without making a single error.
“That was huge,” said Doughty. “It’s a shame that it took 13 games to do it, but we’ll take it.”
Deshotel did show signs of fatigue in the sixth inning when he issued three of his six walks to load the bases with one out. He then got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the potential jam.
“He looked like he was getting a little tired, but we wanted to stick with him,” said Doughty. “He worked ahead for most of the game and he was able to work out of the jam in the sixth.”
Taylor Doughty also had two hits for the Gents and drove in two runs while Mickey Morgan had two singles and one RBI.
Mackay Mouton singled in a run, Alex LeBeouf and Kaleb Cormier each had one hit and Bradley Ancelet and Nathan Richard each had a RBI.
The Gents open District 4-3A play today at 6 p.m. in Westlake.
