Notre Dame, which logged 23 hits and 27 runs in back-to-back run-rule victories over Westlake and Crowley recently, continued their offensive onslaught Saturday in an 11-9 victory over Class 4A state-ranked St. Michael at Miller Stadium.
“We’re doing a lot better on the offensive side; to go farther in the playoffs, that’s what is going to have to happen,” said Notre Dame coach Timmy Robichaux, whose team improved to 16-13 with the victory.
“The top half of our lineup has been pretty consistent, but we just need the bottom half to come through and that’s what has kind of happened the past few games. We’ve hit the ball better in the bottom half.”
The top half of the lineup continues to be led by senior third baseman Connor Goss, who went 3-4 Saturday with a double, a home run and six runs driven in.
“We are definitely top heavy in our lineup,” said Robichaux. “Gavin Bourgeois has done a good job this year in the leadoff spot and Nick (Gossen) has been asked to move or bunt runners over to get them in scoring position for Connor.
“We’ve been lucky that they haven’t been walking him (Goss) very much and he has done a good job and needs to continue to hit in that 3-hole spot for us.”
Goss recorded his first two RBI in the bottom of the first inning on a double. The blast plated Bourgeois, who doubled to deep center field, and Gossen, who reached base via a walk.
Goss also provided a spark in the Pios’ eight-run second inning when he hit a three-run home run over the left field wall. Bourgeois, Gossen, Brennan Corzine and Hogan Guidry each added RBI singles in the frame.
Goss also accounted for the Pios’ final run when he singled to drive in Gossen in the third inning.
Bourgeois earned the victory on the mound after giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks. He struck out three in five innings. Alex Holston took the mound in the sixth inning and gave up two runs on two hits and three walks in the final two frames.
Goss’ 3-for-4 performance highlighted an 11-hit outburst for the Pios. Bourgeois and Corzine each had two hits, including a double and an RBI while Gossen and Guidry each singled and drove in one run. Matt Venable and Cint Faul rounded out the attack with a double each.
The Pios took on Class 4As No. 1-ranked St. Louis in the regular season finale last night, but results were not available at press time.
In other action Saturday, Class B’s top-ranked team - Oak Hill - rallied for four runs in the fourth inning to defeat Crowley, 9-6.
Crowley took a 3-1 advantage after the second inning before Oak Hill exploded for four runs on three hits and two walks in the third to stake a 5-3 advantage.
Crowley rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the frame on Brodie Deshotel’s two-run homer to left but Rams answered with four more runs in the fourth.
The Gents loaded the bases in the fifth inning with no outs but were only able to push across one run on a wild pitch.
Kaleb Cormier was tagged with the loss for the Gents. He gave up four runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning after relieving Deshotel, who started the game. Deshotel gave up five runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out two in 2 2/3 innings.
Deshotel also led the Gents at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double, a home run and three RBI. Mackay Mouton and Steven Bertrand each had two hits while Nathan Richard, Luke Ancelet and Mickey Morgan each had one. Alex LeBouef also drove in a run on a suicide squeeze.
Jacob Wells, Chase George, Devin Rougeau and Micah Perkins each had two hits for Oak Hill.
