Although she was recruited heavily by McNeese State, where her sisters Ashlyn and Caitlyn will be seniors next season, she opted to ink with the Lady Cajuns.
Since then, however, the youngest daughter of Iota coach Stan Baggett has had a change of heart.
With the recent firing of ULL coach Earl Rogers, who recruited Baggett, a window of opportunity opened for the Class 2A All-State MVP.
On Tuesday, she didn’t let her second chance pass her by.
Baggett, who was granted her release from ULL, signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball with her sisters at McNeese State University where she will be eligible immediately.
“It was a very tough decision to leave UL,” said Baggett, who would have played for former Teurlings coach Gary Broadhead at the Lafayette school. “I would have enjoyed playing for coach Broadhead, but the chance to play with my sisters was just too much to pass up.
“I also realized that being from a small town like Iota, I would have had a rougher time adjusting to Lafayette. Lake Charles is more laid back and I also have family there.”
Allison’s decision to join the Cowgirls instead of the Cajuns met with little to no resistance from her family.
“Allison came to me and her mother to discuss her future,” said Stan Baggett. “We told her that it was her decision to make. She was the one that needed to make the call.
“It will definitely save me money on gas next year. And it will be exciting to see the three of them play together for the first time.”
Although Allison and the twins are only four years apart, other than some legendary pickup games at the Iota gym, the trio has never officially played together on the same team.
“I’m just really looking forward to being teammates with my sisters,” said the youngest Baggett.
Baggett averaged 21.5 points, 5.2 assists, 6.1 rebouunds, 2.8 blocks and 2.7 steals per game during her senior season and helped lead the Iota Lady Bulldogs to the Class 2A state title game. She recently was named the All-Acadia Parish MVP and collected the same honor on the District 5-2A team as well as the Class 2A All-State team.
Allison will join a McNeese squad that is losing three guards and two forwards to graduation. Included in that number is former Iota standout Candace LaCombe.
She is also part of a recruiting class that includes Jennings standout Jayln Johnson, Ouachita’s Charity Robinson and Houston’s Jasmine Prophet as well as two junior college transfers in Cecilia Okoye and Arianna James.
