In a letter dated June 15, 2012 addressed to Secretary of State Tom Schedler, Petitjean wrote that while he will assume his assessor duties on Jan. 1, 2013.
“Under these circumstances, I wish to tender my resignation as Mayor of the City of Rayne effective on December 31, 2012 at midnight,” he wrote.
“I am hopeful that this early notice of my resignation will allow the election for a Mayor of the City of Rayne to be placed on the regularly scheduled November 6, 2012 ballot. Doing so will prevent a financial burden on the citizens of Rayne that would otherwise be brought about by the need for a special election.”
According to the state of Louisiana’s election day listings, the deadline to get special measures put on the Nov. 6 ballot is July 18, 2012, giving Rayne approximately one month.
Three suitors have already thrown their name in for the job of Rayne City Mayor–Roland Boudreaux, Cheryl Richard and Chuck Robichaux.
Qualifying dates for the Nov. 6 election are Aug. 15 through Aug. 17 and the last day to register the vote is Oct. 9 because Oct. 8 is Columbus Day. Early voting will begin on Oct. 23 and end on Oct. 30.
Petitjean was elected as Acadia Parish assessor on Oct. 22, 2011, defeating incumbent “Mike” Goss by a margin of 7948 votes to 7713.
