PIERRE PART – A couple spent part of Saturday night perched in a cypress tree above inquisitive, and perhaps hungry, gators.

Assumption deputies say the Baton Rouge couple’s boat sank in sank in Lake Verret south of Baton Rouge about 5 p.m.

They swam to trees near shore bur as darkness fell they noticed alligators converging on their low-hanging perch so they climbed taller, more secure cypress trees.

About 10:30 p.m., the man’s brother noticed a text message on his phone that had been sent by as the couple’s boat broke down hours earlier.

Deputies located the couple about 15 feet up a tree in an area in which deputies noticed several active alligators as they approached for the rescue.
