Civil rights pioneer

ALEXANDRIA – Services for civil rights pioneer and attorney P. Spencer Torry will be Saturday. She died July 2.

She was a teacher before earning her law degree and joining Louis berry in the late 1960s in the campaign for civil justice. She was the first black female attorney in Rapides Parish and the first African American female delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Louisiana.

Survivors include a daughter.

Hospital founder

BATON ROUGE – Services for long-time ob/gyn Dr. Leo Abraham will be Thursday. He died July 3 at age 92.

He practiced medicine for more than 40 years and was a founder of Woman’s Hospital. He also worked at LSU Health Center. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II who held the Bronze Star.

Survivors include his wife Insa, a son and a daughter.

Arrangements are by Rabenhorst.

Former prosecutor

BATON ROUGE – Services for Ernest Eldred, former city prosecutor and special counsel to the Attorney General, will be Friday. He died July 2 at age 82.

He was former Baton Rogue city prosecutor, served as an assistant attorney general and was also a petroleum engineer and specialized in oil and gas law. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife Iris.

Geologist, golf ball collector

BATON ROUGE – Services for geologist and owner of the world’s largest golf ball collection Theodore Hoz will be Saturday. He died June 3 at age 79.

His consulting geologists company specialized in oil field utilization and its offices Lafayette and New Orleans served clients nationwide. His collection of golf balls from around the world is certified by Guinness Book of World Records.

Survivors include his wife Penny, a son and two step-children.

Arrangements are by Resthaven.

Long-time banker

ALEXANDRIA – Services for long-time banker James Prosser will be Friday. He died July 3 at age 91.

He was a U.S. Navy corpsman assigned to the Marine Corps during World War II. He was a career employee of then-Rapides Bank & Trust Co.

Arrangements are by Hixson Brothers.

Economic development specialist

BATON ROUGE – Services for Mary Hanover, an economic development specialist who served six governors, will be Saturday. She died July 1 at age 58.

She was one of the first women to become an economic development specialist and held the international designation of Certified Economic Developer.

Survivors include her husband Dennis, two sons and a daughter.

Arrangements are by Harper-Morris, Pensacola, Fla.

Engineer, retired lt. col.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Services for long-time LSU computer center employee and retired lieutenant colonel Malcom McNaylor are under direction of Madison Chapel. He died June 29 at age 65.

He held two engineering degrees from LSU, worked at the computer center for 34 years and was a veteran of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was with Redstone Arsenal at his death.

Survivors include his wife Pamela and a son.
