Former commissioner of administration

SHREVEPORT – Services will be Tuesday for former Commissioner of Administration Charles E. Roemer, II. He died July 7 at age 89.

He was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II and operated Scopena Plantation, and was a farm equipment dealer, cotton gin owner and crop dusting fleet owner. He was Commissioner of Administration for Gov. Edwin Edwards for his first two terms. He was convicted of racketeering in the 1980 Brilab sting.

Survivors include his wife Adeline and five children, including former Gov. and presidential candidate Buddy Roemer.

Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.

Ex-congressman-lawyer

NEW ORLEANS – Services are pending for former Congressman Rick Tonry. He died at age 77.

He was an attorney elected to Congress in 1976. He resigned four months later amid vote-fraud allegations and pleaded to misdemeanor charges, serving six months in prison.

He founded a Chalmette law firm specializing in criminal defense and personal injury cases.

Retired Picadilly exec

BATON ROUGE – Services are Monday for retired Picadilly President and COO Malcolm Stein, Jr. He died July 4 at age 79.

He worked for Picadilly for 35 years.

Survivors include a son.

Catholic educator, principal

BATON ROUGE – Services for former Catholic educator Brother Donna Berry ware Monday. He died July 6 at age 84.

He serviced Brothers of the Sacred Heart schools for more than 50 years, including as principal at Menard High in Alexandria, Catholic High in Baton Rouge and Brother Martin High in New Orleans. His last school post was president of St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Miss.

Treme Brass Band drummer

NEW ORLEANS – Services for longtime bass drummer with the Treme Brass Band Lionel Batiste are pending. He died July 8 at age 80.

In the traditional brass band cap, white shirt and black tie, . Batiste appeared in numerous commercials and TV shows, including HBO’s “Treme.”
