Home economist, teacher

LAFAYETTE – Services are Monday for home economist Hilda Nations. She died July 19 at age 91.

She was former home demonstration agent and a teacher in Cameron Parish. She later managed E.A. Martin Dining Hall at ULL, taught home ec at Carencro High and taught at the Lafayette Parish Vocational Center.

Survivors include four children.

Surgeon, former coroner, retired colonel

PLAQUEMINE – Services for surgeon and former Iberville coroner Dr. A.N. Diodene, Jr. will be Tuesday. He died July 18.

He was a U.S. Army Medical Corps retired colonel, who saw duty n Vietnam, Panama, Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After the military, he practiced orthopedics and hand surgery with Redler, Brown Williams Clinic in New Orleans.

He was a two-term coroner and founded the Iberbville Parish Medical Society. At his death, he was chief of orthopedic surgery at the VA Medical Center, New Orleans and medical director and member of the board of Special Olympics as well as associate professor of orthopedics at Tulane.

Survivors include his wife Jeanelle, a son and a daughter.

Arrangements are by Lake Lawn, Metairie.

Former NSU teacher

NATCHITOCHES – Services for retired Northwestern State teacher Sadie Thomas will be Tuesday. She died July 21 at age 89.

She was former owner of a carpet and drapery shop and teacher and director of the pre-school in the NSU Home Economics department. She taught undergraduate classes and supervised graduate early childhood education.

Survivors include nine children.

Arrangements are by Blanchard-St. Denis.

Red Cross, Girl Scout worker

SHREVEPORT – Services for former Red Cross and Girl Scout official Phyllis Bothwell are Monday. She died at age 94.

During World War II, she was Red Cross club director in New Guinea, the Phillipines and then Japan. Later, she was director of Girl Scouting in Japan, Okinawa and Taiwan.

Arrangements are by Aulds.

Former Oklahoma, NLU fooball player, retired lt. col.

MONROE – Services for retired lieutenant colonel and former NLU and Oklahoma football player William (Gerry) Marchbank, III were Sunday. He died July 19 at age 74.

He played center for the University of Oklahoma Sooners before transferring to NLU, where he was starting center and president of the student body.

He was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Army, including service in Vietnam. After retiring from active duty, he was director of campus security at NLU, director of North Delta Regional Planning & Development and a teacher at Riverfield Academy.

Survivors include his wife Camille, two sons and a daughter.
