Iota wins CHS tourney; ND takes runnerup honors at Ursuline

CROWLEY – The Iota Lady Bulldogs claimed their second tournament title in as many weeks as they defeated Carencro in the finals of the Crowley High Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Dogs (12-2) defeated Sulphur, Northwest and Jennings in pool play before edging out Rayne in the semifinals to reach the championship game.

Madison Meche and Taylor DeVille paced the Lady Dogs in the finals. Meche led the charge with 12 kills and three digs while DeVille had six kills and four digs.

Erika Manual added three kills and two blocks.

Also contributing in the victory were Jillian Boone (25 digs), Melinda Russell (15 digs),  Claire LeJeune (9 digs, 2 aces), Paige Soirez (13 digs) and Mallory Faul (23 assists, 1 kill). 

Crowley High went 2-1 in the tournament to improve to 5-5 on the season. The CHS Ladies defeated Northside Christian in their opening game (25-17, 14-25, 15-11) but fell to Carencro (23-25, 24-26) in their second contest. 

The Ladies rebounded on Saturday and defeated LaGrange in three games.

Northside Christian (6-4) beat Carencro but lost to Crowley and Sulphur in their three games.

Iota returns to action tomorrow when the Lady Dogs play host to Delcambre.

Crowley will also be in action at DeQuincy while Northside Christian will return to the court Thursday when they entertain Delcambre.

Notre Dame takes runnerup 

honors at Ursuline Tournament

In other action, Notre Dame’s Lady Pios claimed runnerup honors in the Ursuline Tournament in New Orleans.

The Lady Pios defeated Catholic-PC in the tournament opener and then handed host Ursuline their first loss of the season on Friday. 

The Lady Pios defeated St. Thomas More, Teurlings and De La Salle Saturday to reach the finals, where they fell to Mt. Carmel, 17-25, 15-25.

Megan Malmay and Lindsey Miller led the Lady Pios offensively, logging 33 and 27 kills, respectively, during the six-game stretch. Malmay also had 48 digs and four aces while Miller had 10 digs, one ace and two blocks.

Katherine Kirsch added 24 kills, 11 digs and five blocks while Grace Morgan had 14 kills and 20 digs.

Alex Miller helped set up the offensive attack with 60 assists and Sam Lyons had 46. Miller also had 11 kills, 26 digs, nine aces and two blocks while Lyons racked up 12 kills, 29 digs, two aces and four blocks.

Taylor Boulet had 68 digs to go along with three aces.

The Lady Pios will host Sacred Heart today at 4 p.m.
