Iota knocks off Iowa in district volleyball opener

IOWA – The Iota Lady Bulldogs opened Division IV, District 1 action Tuesday with a dominating 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 victory over Iowa on the Lady Jackets’ homecourt.

Iota, which has now won 17 straight games, improved to 24-2 on the season with the victory and now sits at No. 3 in the Division IV power rankings. John Curtis is No. 1 followed by University. De La Salle is No. 4 while Notre Dame comes in at No. 5.

In Tuesday’s victory, Madison Meche and Kaylee Richard paced the Lady Dogs’ offensive attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Taylor DeVille added seven kills and three blocks while Madison Benoit and Erika Manuel each had three kills. Benoit also logged two blocks.

Mallory Faul set up the offense with 33 assists to go along with two kills.

Defensively, the Lady Dogs were led by Jillian Boone (39 digs, 2 aces) and Melinda Russell (22 digs, 1 ace). Claire LeJeune followed with 10 digs, Paige Soirez had nine and Emily Navarre had eight.

Iota returns to action on Monday when the Lady Dogs travel to Leroy to take on North Vermilion in another district matchup.

Other Action

The Notre Dame Lady Pios gave Division III’s secon-ranked E.D. White all they could handle and then some before falling in five sets (22-25, 25-16, 26-24, 24-26, 13-15) Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Pios, who take on Catholic High of New Iberia this evening in their district opener, fell to 16-7 on the season with the loss.

Crowley High was also on the losing end as they fell to Cecilia in straight sets, 16-25, 23-25, 17-25.

Crowley opens district play this evening at home against Rayne.

Unfortunately, no more information was made available by the two schools on those games.
