We may only be at the midway point of the 2012 prep football season, but for some teams, it’s make or break time.

For Crowley High, sitting at 1-4, the pressure is on and every game from here on is pretty much a must-win situation as far as the playoffs are concerned.

Iota, also 1-4, is in the same boat and needs to pile up victories in a hurry.

A 5-5 record will more than likely earn a postseason berth for each, but a loss this week will make it tough on both teams.

Notre Dame, Rayne and Church Point, on the other hand, have all enjoyed early-season success so a Week 5 victory isn’t a must, but it would be nice.

And speaking of nice...

William Primeaux has worked his magic again and won the Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest for the second straight week. He missed just three games, edging out three other players by virtue of the tiebreaker, including runnerup Andrew Sarver.

As for myself, it was one of my best week’s yet. Although I have tied for the best record in years past, I never actually had the overall best record.

That is until last week.

That’s right, I missed just two games.

However, that’s the extent of my bragging because for some reason, I feel that I will take a beating this week.

Now, on to this week’s picks:

Starting on the local prep scene, I’m taking:

Notre Dame over Jennings - The Pios just keep getting better and better each and every week. This one could be a close one, but, then again, I thought last week would be a stiff challenge for Notre Dame. Boy, was I wrong. I don’t see the Pios dropping a district game.

Iota over Bunkie – The Bunkie Panthers are down, and I mean down, this year. Iota has made huge strides since Week 1 and I think this win over Bunkie will springboard them into a tight race for the district title when all is said and done.

Church Point over Port Barre - Surprisingly, the Bears were totally dominated last week by Erath. I don’t look for that to happen again. I’m taking the Bears by two touchdowns.

Crowley over Iowa – The last four weeks have been a struggle to say the least for the Gents. However, a step back down into their own classification should help. This one could actually go down to the wire, but if the Gents can keep it close, I like their chances in the fourth quarter.

Livonia over Rayne – I went back and forth on this one. Both teams are putting up big numbers offensively, but neither has played a real challenging schedule. It’s tough to know how good they actually are. It’s one of those coin-flip games.

In other games:

I’m going with Westlake over South Beauregard, Eunice over Northwest, Ville Platte over Mamou, Pine Prairie over Oakdale, Barbe over Acadiana, Carencro over Comeaux, St. Thomas More over Teurlings and Gueydan over Ascension Episcopal.

Among the colleges:

LSU begins a rough stretch of four big games in five weeks. And I don’t have them starting on a good note either.

I’m taking Florida in an upset in this one. The Tigers haven’t shown me much the last two weeks, at least not what I would expect from a Top 5 team. But, who knows, maybe Florida is over-rated, too.

I’m also taking ULL over Tulane , South Carolina over Georgia , Michigan over Purdue, Notre Dame over Miami , Ohio State over Nebraska and Texas over West Virginia.
