BATON ROUGE – After Nov. 6, Acadia Parish could be one of three or more parishes to set term limits to its school board members.

Jefferson and Lafayette parishes already have term limits for school board members set in their parish. But the Nov. 6 ballot will give each of the remaining 62 parishes in the state the opportunity to fall in line.

The ballot, which will feature, the presidential election, district three seat in Congress, nine state amendments and a mosquito tax by the police jury as well as the special election for the Rayne mayor, will let voters decide if school board members’ four-year terms should be limited to three consecutive terms.

But it isn’t a statewide vote in anything but the general sense.

While it will appear on all 62 parishes’ ballots (as Lafayette and Jefferson parishes already have limits), each parish will decide individually. Meaning, Acadia Parish can vote “yes” and put one in place, Jeff Davis can vote “no” and not, and so forth.

Also, the vote only limits the number of consecutive terms, not the number of overall terms a board member can serve.

On the ballot, the “PW School District Local Option - Term Limits” as it will appear on the ballot will be a simple “yes” or “no” vote.

A vote “yes” would not affect the term of any of the current school board members. Instead, passage would see the change begin with the next election cycle for school board members, which is in 2014.

The term limit question found its way onto Louisiana parish ballots after the state House of Representatives passed Act 386, House Bill 292, during its regular legislative session in May.

The bill was co-sponsored by Rep. Kirk Talbot, Rep. Simone B. Champagne, Rep. Cameron Henry, Rep. Nick Lorusso and Rep. Stephen E. Pugh.

Also, as a reminder, early voting begins Oct. 23 and concludes Oct. 30 (early voting is not held on Sundays). This allows voters who cannot vote on Nov. 6 or do not want to wait to cast their ballots for school board term limits as well as everything else on the ballot.

Early voting in Acadia Parish will be held at the Registrar of Voters Office, located at 568 Northwest Court Circle in Crowley, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early voting will be held Oct. 23-27 and Oct. 29-30.
