BERWICK — Charges have been upgraded against the alleged impaired driver whose vehicle struck one driven by 21-year-old Miles Liner Thursday.

Liner died Saturday.

Yancey Hebert, 46, of Pierre Part, on Tuesday was charged on a warrant with one count of vehicular homicide, 23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky Babin said. This charge upgrades one of the original counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring, he said.

Babin also said that while it normally takes four or five weeks for state police investigators to process such cases, he has asked them to rush whatever they can to prosecutors. Police are waiting for blood and urine test results to return from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab before further charges regarding Hebert’s intoxication can be levied.

He originally was charged with driving left of center and two counts of first degree vehicular negligent injuring, Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Friday. Hebert now has charges of:

—One count vehicular homicide

—One count first degree vehicular negligent injuring

—One count driving left of center

Hebert is being held in the Assumption Parish Detention Center. Bail is set at $200,161.50.

Liner and his high school sweetheart, Taylor Adams, were returning from their colleges in Baton Rouge to Berwick High School to participate in a skit during Thursday night’s homecoming pep rally.

Hebert was traveling east in a 2002 Chevy Silverado on La. 70 near Shell Beach Road in Belle River when he attempted to pass another vehicle traveling east, the sheriff said. Before he finished the maneuver, he hit the 2006 Nissan Sentra Liner was driving westbound head-on, Waguespack said.

“Due to driver error and intoxication, Mr. Hebert’s truck drifted completely across the center line into the westbound lane and struck Mr. Liner’s vehicle head-on. Both vehicles then veered off the roadway to the north where they came to rest,” an Assumption Parish press release stated.

The accident occurred at 1:46 p.m. Thursday.

Liner turned 21 the week of his death. He was a junior studying biological engineering at Louisiana State University and vice president of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity on that campus.
