KENNER – A trio of shoppers who left an infant and dog locked in a car while they shopped at Walmart are on bond awaiting a court appearance.

A window of the vehicle was partially down with the 10-month-old and the dog inside when spotted by a passerby who alerted a a security officer. The passerby had heard the child crying from inside the vehicle.

Officers located the mother, Quija Hawkins, 18; the grandmother, Lisa Hawkins, 38; and the baby’s aunt, Troynisha Hawkins, 17, inside the store. Each was charged with child desertion. The infant was placed with its other grandmother and the dog was put in custody of the city Humane Department.

According to NOLA, the women told the officers they didn’t want to wake the baby who was sleeping in a child safety seat. So after making sure the doors were locked and the window was partially opened, they left the infant inside the car with their dog.

Officers noted that at the time of incident the New Orleans International Airport reported that it was 53 degrees outside. A review of surveillance cameras revealed the Hawkins were inside the store for over 45 minutes before they were located.

There was no indication what the trio was shopping for.
