CROWLEY – The Notre Dame Pioneers were looking to start their first win streak of the 2012 prep basketball season Monday evening when they hosted Ascension Episcopal at A.B. Dore gym.
And the way the first half went, it looked as if the Pios were well on their way to doing that.
But a sluggish third quarter put the Pios behind the eight-ball and they never recovered as the Gators slipped away with a 39-34 victory.
“We put together three good quarters tonight, but, unfortunately, the third quarter hurt us,” said Notre Dame coach Donald Adams, whose Pios scored just five points in the third frame. “We had some good looks, we just didn’t execute.”
The Pios jumped up to a 17-15 lead at the half behind nine points from Tre Milstead, who finished the night with a game-high 16 points. He also had 10 rebounds and three steals.
But the third quarter was all AES.
The Gators took advantage of numerous missed shots by the Pios and went on a 14-5 run to take a 29-22 advantage.
The Pios went toe-to-toe with the Gators in the final frame and outscored them 12-10.
“We just couldn’t get anything to fall,” said Adams of the third quarter. “And that really put the pressure on us heading into the fourth quarter. But we made a little run, we just fell a little short.”
Tyler Simar followed Milstead with six points, Boedy Borill added five and Jacob Leleux had three. John Duos and Brett Didier rounded out the Pios’ scoring with two points each.
Notre Dame returns to action this evening when they take on Iowa in the opening round of the Iowa Tournament. That game is slated for 8 o’clock.
Rebels slip past Iowa
MIDLAND – The Midland Rebels jumped out to an early lead and survived a late run by Iowa to slip past the Yellow Jackets, 37-31, Monday evening at the Rebels’ home gym.
The Rebels went back and fourth with the Jackets in the opening frame before taking an 11-9 advantage on Darren Arceneaux’s jumper in the lane.
Midland jumped out to a 23-13 lead at the half before Iowa cut the deficit to 26-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
Alan Vondenstein and Jake Gautreaux combined for seven points in the final eight minutes to help fend off a late rally as the Rebels held on for the victory.
Vondenstein led the Rebels with 15 points while Gautreaux had nine. Arceneaux added eight points, Taatum Rubin and Stephen Primeaux each had two and Randy Primeaux finished with one.
The Lady Rebels were also in action and they cruised to a 55-26 victory over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
However, no further information on that game was turned in by the school.
Lady Dogs fall
to Lafayette
LAFAYETTE – Iota’s Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-3 on the season Monday with a 45-37 loss to Lafayette High.
Brittany Johnson paced the Lady Dogs with 18 points, connecting on five 3-point attempts.
Taylor DeVille also had a big game, recording yet another double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Jillian Boone hit two 3-pointers and finished with six points while Madison Smith rounded out the scoring with one point.
