IOWA – An early scoring frenzy, which included five 3-pointers in the first quarter, was too much for Notre Dame to overcome in their opening game of the 2012 Nissan of Lake Charles Iowa Classic Wednesday.

Iowa scored 26 points in the first eight minutes and never looked back in taking a 79-42 victory over the Pios.

“They (Iowa) got off to a fast start and we never really gave ourselves a chance,” said ND coach Donald Adams. “Iowa played good in every phase of the game: They out rebounded us, out shot us and they executed on defense.”

The Jackets went on a 12-2 run to start the game and outscored the Pios 14-7 over the final 4 1/2 minutes to stake a commanding 26-9 lead.

It didn’t get much better for the Pios in the second quarter.

Iowa settled down from beyond the arch, but the Yellow Jackets scored at will in the paint. They also forced three straight turnovers that led to points in transition with under a minute to go to take a 48-17 cushion into the break.

“We were beat from the get-go,” said Adams. “We are young and we were a little intimidated. That environment really got to us and it showed.”

The Jackets’ offense slowed a bit in the second half, but Iowa still managed to outscore the Pios 33-25 in the final two frames.

Tre Milstead paced the Pios with 11 points.  Jacob Leleux and Claiton Johnson had nine and eight points, respectively.

Also scoring for the Pios were: Tyler Simar, seven points;  John Duos, three and Boedy Borill and Brett Didier, two points each.

“One of our main problems is that we are young and inexperienced,” said Adams, who has just two juniors mixed in with a number of sophomores and freshmen. “You hate to say it as a coach, but it is kind of expected. But we have to grow up real fast regardless of how young we are.”

The Pios will return to Iowa Saturday when they take on either Northwest or Sam Houston at 10:30 a.m. in a loser’s bracket contest.

Lady Pios top Erath

DELCAMBRE – The Notre Dame Lady Pios jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it in a 56-29 rout of Erath in the first game of the Delcambre Tournament Wednesday.

The Lady Pios knocked down six 3-pointers on the night and went 10-for-16 from the free throw line.

Alex Miller, Hanna Esthay and Liddy Rothermel each had two 3-pointers in the winning effort.

Miller led the Lady Pios with 14 points while Esthay and Annie Sarver had nine and eight points, respectively.

Also scoring for the Lady Pios were Madeline LeJeune (7), Rothermel (6), Elise LeBeouf (4), Katherine Kirsch (4), Tori Onebane (2) and Gabby Romero (2).

CHS Ladies crush AES

OPELOUSAS – The Crowley Ladies held Ascension Episcopal to just seven points through the first three quarters and cruised to a dominating 53-17 victory over the Lady Gators in the opening game of the Westminster Tournament Wednesday.

Mercedes Rogers and Tiara Dugar combined for 28 points in the victory. Rogers scored 17 while Dugar pitched in 11.

Allan Plummer added eight points, Teara Breaux, Akeela Dugar, Tyisha Mouton and Alexis Stevens each scored four and Myah Rogers had one.

Lady Dogs slip

past Northside

LAFAYETTE – Jillian Boone and Mallory Faul combined for 21 points Wednesday to help lead the Iota Lady Bulldogs past Northside, 30-20, in the Acadiana Tournament.

Iota trailed 22-21 after three quarters before going on a 9-0 run in the fourth to seal the victory.

Boone led the charge with 11 points while Faul followed with 10.

Brittany Johnson added five points, Alexis St. Andre had three and Taylor DeVille finished with one.
