The Notre Dame Lady Pios broke open a tight game in the second half by scoring 35 points to improve to 5-1 on the season heading into tonight’s 6 p.m. home contest against Teurlings.
“This was a big win for us,” said Notre Dame coach Nolan Theriot. “It’s the first time we’ve beaten Lafayette High since I’ve been here.
“The fact that we put a game together for four quarters was really good. I think that’s the key, to get four quarters of play where we’re going to play at a high level.”
The Lady Pios started out the game on fire and jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Lafayette rallied to cut the deficit to five (13-8) at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Pios then hit a dry spell in the second quarter and Lafayette rallied to its first lead of the game at 16-15 with 4:37 remaining in the half.
However, back-to-back buckets by Alex Miller and Liddy Rothermel along with a 3-pointer from Katherine Kirsch just before the half gave the Lady Pios a 22-20 advantage at the break.
The Lady Pios made some adjustments at the half and the changes paid immediate dividends.
Notre Dame scored 17 points in the third quarter and outscored Lafayette 18-7 in the fourth to walk away with the victory.
Madelyn LeJeune scored 13 of her team-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to lead the charge.
“In the second half, we put Madelyn and Alex (Miller) on the bottom of the 1-3-1 defense and that seemed to give us a spark,” said Theriot. “Gabbie (Romero) and Sam (Lyons) did a good job of moving the ball around and dribble penetrating on the top and getting those girls open. I mean they were open anyway, we just couldn’t make the pass in the first half.”
Kirsch added 11 points in the victory while Romero and Lyons each had six.
Miller added five points, Hanna Esthay had four and Liddy Rothermel rounded out the scoring with two.
