The 69-year-old said his wife, Joycet, matched all five white ball numbers in the Nov. 28 drawing, but she missed the Powerball number.
“I thought I only won $1,000,” she said when she joined her husband at Lottery headquarters in Baton Rouge to collect the prize.
When Joyce found out she won a much more substantial amount, she told her husband to sign the ticket.
“I tried not to get emotional,” David said as he wiped away tears. He received $700,000 after federal and state taxes were withheld.
He said his grandchildren told him it was time to buy a new boat. Family members who came with him to collect his prize said they would like to go on vacation, but Joyce Hebert reminded them that she doesn’t fly.
The ticket was purchased at Winn Dixie #1353 on Brownswitch Road in Slidell. The store will receive a one-time bonus of $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.
