ALEXANDRIA – Carroll Furniture, a business institution here since 1940, is closing.

One of the owners, Frank Brame, said the decision was a matter of business concerns and just timing.

The store, now on Memorial Drive near Alexandria Mall, was on 2nd Street downtown for years.

It became an icon in the years after World War II when Carroll Converse’s advertising in the early days of television urged people to buy furniture today and “pay us pay day.”

An official closing date in early 2013 has not yet been set.
