CROWLEY - Acadia Parish citizens who awoke Thursday morning were in for quite a shock if they didn’t turn on the news prior to work. Ten inches of rain fell across the parish Wednesday night and police, fire department officials and city workers with sand bags scrambled to close roads and stop floodwaters from entering buildings.

Parkerson Ave. in Crowley resembled a river as Crowley Police Department officers tried to get motorist to slow down so as not to push water - which had risen to the door of several N. Parkerson businesses - underneath the doors. They were not always successful.

Crowley Mayor Greg Jones played the part of an officer as he reported a tow truck from Cliff’s Towing which was headed north but switched to the southbound lane and for a short time was headed straight into oncoming traffic. He luckily switched back into the southbound lane just as it appeared he was going to cause an accident.

There were several reports of Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Officials conducting rescue operations in the morning hours Thursday. Yet nothing specific had been reported by mid-morning.

“It was crazy leaving my house this morning,” said Paula Gary who works in Lafayette as a nurse at Lafayette General Hospital. “There were many cars stuck that couldn’t get through. Not much fun. Hopefully a lot drains by the time I get home.”

An extradordinary emergency council meeting was called by the Crowley City Council to assess and determine how to best handle the situation.

As of 10:30 the following streets were closed in Acadia Parish according to reports

La. 91 Pontoon Bridge @ Esterwood

La. 367 (1 mile north of La. 370)

U.S. 90 (Between Rayne and Crowley)
