BATON ROUGE – In a 206-119 vote by Louisiana high school principals, the LHSAA has approved a landmark decision to split select and non-select schools into separate playoffs in the football postseason. Football is the only sport that will be affected.

Winnfield High principal Jane Griffin offered the proposal, with Teurlings Catholic principal Mike Boyer attempting to get it tabled. Boyer's motion was voted down.

While the decision will not affect districts during the regular season, the playoffs will be reformatted, with non-select schools staying within their typical classifications. For the select schools, Class 1A and 2A teams will play in one division while Class 3A, 4A and 5A schools will be in another.
