CROWLEY – You know you’re having a good night shooting the basketball when your coach is the only person stopping you from scoring.
Or so it seemed Tuesday when Notre Dame’s Alex Miller poured in a game-high 24 points to help lead the Lady Pios to a 60-32 blowout victory over the Crowley Ladies.
The Lady Pios improved to 23-5 overall and 8-1 in District 4-3A play with the victory. Crowley fell to 15-9 and 6-3.
“Alex really played well tonight,” said ND coach Nolan Theriot of Miller. “Her biggest defender tonight was me. The only thing that stopped her from shooting was me.
“Actually, I told her to keep shooting in the second half. She was one of the only ones knocking them down so I let her go.”
Miller connected on five 3-pointers on the night, including three in the second half.
Her contribution was much more than that, however.
“I think she came full circle tonight,” said Theriot. “She played an outstanding game defensively and offensively, she did everything we wanted her to do.”
Sam Lyons and Gabbie Romeo led the charge for the Lady Pios in the first half by combining for 12 points in the opening frame to push Notre Dame’s lead to 17-7.
Romero knocked down two 3-pointers in the opening frame while Lyons hit three midrange jumpers.
“When Gabbie knocked down the first 3-pointer to start the game, I knew we were going to be okay,” said Theriot. “And Sam really kind of put the game on her shoulders early on. I thought her three buckets were really the biggest thing to start the whole thing off.”
Notre Dame took a 27-12 lead at the half before Crowley rallied to cut the advantage to 29-22 early in the third quarter.
But the Ladies’ rally ended there.
The Lady Pios finished the quarter on a 15-3 run to take a 44-25 cushion and the only thing in doubt was how many points they would finish with.
“In the third quarter, they (Crowley) cut the lead to seven but we didn’t panic,” said Theriot. “We continued to run our offense and we knocked down shots.”
The Lady Pios outscored the Ladies 16-7 in the fourth quarter.
Romero and Lyons each pitched in 10 points in the victory while Liddy Rothermel and Madelyn LeJeune each had six. Elise LeBeouf rounded out the scoring with four points.
Tiara Dugar paced the Ladies with 13 points and Alanna Plummer had eight. Mercedes Rogers added six points, Raven Ardoin had three and Myah Rogers scored two.
The Lady Pios will play host to South Beauregard Friday at 6 p.m. Crowley will be in action at Westlake.
CROWLEY – The Crowley Gents shrugged off a sluggish start and outscored Notre Dame 46-20 in the final three quarters to walk away with a key District 4-3A victory Tuesday evening.
The Gents improved to 14-13 overall and 5-4 in league play with the victory. The Pios fell to 3-24 and 0-9.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 10-6 advantage in the first quarter behind four points from Tre Milstead.
But the Pios were unable to keep that intensity in the second frame and the Gents took advantage by outscoring the Pios 19-7 to take a 25-17 edge.
The Gents followed that up with 21 more points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 46-24. Each team scored just six points in the final frame.
Marcus Williams led the Gents with 12 points ande John Davis and Danny Malbrough each had 10. Andre Mills followed with six points, Charles Onezine and Damon Malbrough each pitched in four points and Leroy Washington, Myan Stevenson and Tiron Foreman each had two.
Milstead had 10 points for the Pios. He was followed by Brice Bandon and Luke Habetz with five points each. Claiton Johnson added three points, Brent Didier, Hunter Meche and Christian Landry each scored two and John Duos had one.
