Monroe Police said the boy was a student at Madison James Foster Elementary School.
The school received information that the child had the firearm and found it in his book bag.
The Monroe Police Department was notified and responded immediately, taking custody of the firearm and the student.
The child was released into his parents’ custody.
Officials did not say what grade level the boy was in.
