“My husband thought it was a tornado,” Tammy Marlin said. “I thought it was an explosion. I thought that our water heater had exploded.”
What actually caused the noise was a vehicle crashing through the Marlins’ home, which they have owned for 18 months and is located just off La. Hwy. 92 in the Rue des Cannes subdivision.
A driver, whose name was not released, reportedly lost control of his vehicle as he traveled west on 92 toward U.S. Hwy. 167 Friday. The vehicle jumped a ditch before veering into the Marlins’ front yard, going completely through the house, and into the back yard.
The vehicle did not damage any of the rooms, including the Marlins’ master bedroom. The incident did leave the living area, dining area and kitchen destroyed.
“We came out of the room and the first thing I saw was water,” Marlin said. “I thought the water heater had blown up. Then I could hear the man’s voice. He asked if anyone was in the house and if everyone was OK.
“I went back to my room to get some shoes and by the time I got back out the man was in the front yard. He appeared to be OK.”
The driver made the call to 911. The driver reportedly received a citation.
“He said he was coming home from work and dozed off,” Tammy Marlin explained of what she knew of the situation.
It is a situation that could have taken a completely different turn had it occurred 24 hours earlier.
“My husband got up during the night and went to sleep in his recliner in the living room,” Tammy Marlin said. “That is not unusual for him to do.
“That recliner is now destroyed.”
Daylight brought a fresh view of the damage. With that, as well as time for the some of the initial shock to wear off, did not come bitterness from Tammy Marlin.
“We have things, things that were destroyed,” Tammy Marlin said. “We can replace all of those things. We are OK and the driver is OK.
“Those are the things that I am thankful for.”
