The Eunice Symphony Orchestra’s spring concert will be Saturday in the Eunice High Auditorium.
Sixty-five to seventy musicians, conducted by Nancy Simon, will present an assortment of music. Tickets are $5, with children under 6 admitted free. They may be purchased in advance or at the door.

Safety-driving class
offered this month
The St. Landry Council on Aging and AARP are sponsoring a safe-driving class for persons 55 or older.
Persons completing the eight-hour class receive a discounted auto insurance rate, regardless of who their carrier is.
The classes will be April 16-17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Kendall Fontenot’s State Farm Agency, 1110 West Laurel.
Class size is limited.

Kindergarten registration for Eunice public schools will be April 28 through May 1.
Parents will need to have child’s original birth certificate, updated shots record, social security card, mother’s social security number, head of household’s social security number and proof of residence.

Eunice Elementary will be signing up Pre-K students for the 2008-2009 school year April 28-May 9.
Your child must be 4 years old on or before September 30, 2008 and you must have a copy of the following items in order to sign-up your child for Pre-K: birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency (current utility bill), immunization card, and head of household’s social security number.
Sign up is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Glendale Elementary is holding 2008-09 pre-K Title I registration in the school office through April 30.

Two birdwatching
events at Arboretum
Join the site naturalist on Saturday, from 9 to 11 a.m., for a birdwatching hike at the Louisiana State Arboretum in Ville Platte.
During the program, the naturalist will offer participants a brief introduction to birdwatching. Visitors can then participate in a hike through a mature beech-magnolia forest and be taught to identify a variety of birds that can be found in the area. Participants may bring their own binoculars or borrow ones supplied by the site on a first-come, first-served basis.
That evening, from 7-8 p.m., join the naturalist to see some of the birds that live on and around the lake at Chicot State Park.
The lakeshore provides an ideal setting for viewing a variety of aquatic and woodland species and evening is an excellent time for birdwatching.

Gospel Music Fest
scheduled in Basile
A Gospel Music Festival will be held from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Basile Town Park.
The festival will be open to the public with no admission charge.
In addition to music, there will be food booths, arts and crafts booths and fun jumps.

A hamburger sale to benefit Kenneth Bertrand’s medical expenses will be held Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Sittig Road Fire Station.

mother with cancer
A poker run to benefit Peggy Kratzer, a single mother with cancer, will be held Saturday from Bubba’s at Jennings, beginning at 9 a.m.
Entry is $15 per person; winning hand is $100. Vehicles are welcomed.
Stops will be made in Jennings, Lacassine, Kinder, Basile and again in Jennings.
Evangeline ride
benefits St. Jude
The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Posse will hold a trail ride benefiting St. Jude’s Hospital on Saturday.
The ride starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Chauncey Pitre barn on Hwy. 10 west of Ville Platte.
A $10 entry fee includes lunch.

Poetry Month
Throughout April, the LeDoux Library at LSUE will host poetry events to celebrate National Poetry Month.
Included will be the National Poetry Writing Month challenge, with flexible monthly goals ranging from 5, 10, 15, 20, or the “a poem a day challenge” of 30.
There will be two writing sessions a week - Wednesday lunchtimes from 12-1 p.m. and Friday nights from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
