The Evangeline Parish Police Jury held a special meeting Monday, June 16, to schedule a public hearing on the proposed stock law in Ward Four.
The public hearing will allow those interested to comment on the proposed law before the jury discusses the possibility of placing the issue on the ballot for October. Juror Lamar Johnson said he wants the people of Ward Four to vote and decide for themselves if a stock law is what they want. Currently, Ward Four is the only part of the parish without a stock law.
The public hearing was scheduled for July 21, at 5 p.m., prior to the jury’s regular meeting.
The jury also briefly discussed the status of Elroy George, manager of Crooked Creek Recreational Park who was placed on suspension with pay pending an investigation by the state police. The jury made no decision on the matter and tabled it. It will be discussed further at the jury’s next meeting.
The jury also learned the parish received approximately $1 million that has been allocated as part of the Hazard Mitigation Plan. Secretary/Treasurer Doug Deville said the money will be used to “harden” facilities, such as the police department and courthouse. This would include purchasing stronger windows and other items deemed more “wind proof,” Deville said.
