Lady Lakers excel at Dance Camp

It has been said that “to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”

The Lake Arthur High School Lady Lakers not only subscribe to that noble notion, but they have been fully implementing it in past competition!

The Pride and Joy of our lake city recently attended the prestigious U.D.A. (Universal Dance Association) Dance Camp in Lafayette from June 23-26, 2008, bringing back a boatload of awards in the process. The team stayed on UL Lafayette’s campus in the Conference Center dorms and attended dance camp at the new Leon Moncla Athletic Facility and Bourgeois Hall.

On the first night of camp, the girls competed in the Home Routine Competition. For this event, each team is allowed to bring one routine of their choice and style to be judged and rated by the UDA staff.

The Lady Lakers performed a hip hop routine, choreographed by Ashley Benoit. The girls received a Blue Superior Ribbon for their performance.

They also were awarded fourth place out of 10 teams for their home routine. This place gives the Lady Lakers a bid to compete at the UDA national championships in Orlando, Florida in February. Only those top four teams were given a bid to the competition.

Each night of camp, the Lady Lakers were also awarded a spirit stick for their great personalities and hard work ethic. By the end of camp, the team accumulated many blue Superior ribbons, as well as a few Excellent and Outstanding ribbons. They also received 27 gold drill down ribbons. These ribbons were awarded for excellence in the drill down exercises.

The Lady Lakers also had six team members compete in the All-Star competition. Those members were Morgan Benoit, Leslie Bordelon, Katie Cantrelle, Morgan Hay, Tori Touchet and Skye Weekly.

This was the first year of UDA camp for the entire Lady Laker team. The Lady Lakers have not participated in UDA camp since 2005.

The Lady Lakers consist of nine veteran members and eight rookie members. They are under the direction of Becky Gauthier and are coached by Ashley Benoit, who also does most of the team’s choreography.

Both Gauthier and Benoit were awarded a certificate of Excellence for their completion of the UDA coach’s program.

Dina Bourgeois is the school sponsor of the Lady Lakers. The girls will be performing this year at all L.A.H.S. football games, most L.A.H.S. district basketball games, and will also be competing at area dance competitions.

Lady Laker members include, Silver Duhon, Leslie Bordelon, Tori Touchet, Morgan Benoit, Jamie Hitt, and Morgan Hay, Katie Cantrelle, Ashalun Brown, Marisa Duhon, Skye Weekly, Tori Fuselier, Alyssa Abshire, Shanel Henry, Devyn Trahan, Alaina Richard, Hillory Roy and Kailee Courts.
