Jindal appoints Drug/Crime Board

BATON ROUGE- Today, Governor Bobby Jindal announced appointments to the Drug Control and Violent Crime Policy Board.

The Drug Control and Violent Crime Policy Board serves to advise the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice, develop a statewide drug control and violent crime strategy and perform any duties and functions requested by the governor and/or the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice.

According to Executive Order BJ 08-46, the board is comprised of the following members:

• The superintendent of the Department of Public Safety or the superintendent’s designee,

• The executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association, or the executive director’s designee

• The executive director of the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association or the executive director’s designee

• Three district attorneys, one each from the eastern, the western, and the middle areas of the state

• Three sheriffs, one each from the eastern, the western, and the middle areas of the state

• Three chiefs of police, one each from the eastern, the western, and the middle areas of the state

• One marshal or constable selected from either the eastern, the western, or the middle areas of the state

• Five at-large members who are private citizens and/or former members of the state judiciary and who are active in community drug control and prevention.

Appointments to the Drug Control and Violent Crime Policy Board:

Doug Anderson, of Simmesport, is the sheriff of Avoyelles Parish and will serve as the sheriff from the central area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

Doug Browning, of Central, is the Central Chief of Police and will serve as the chief of police from the central area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

Don Burkett, of Many, is the district attorney for the 11th Judicial District and will serve as the district attorney from the western area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

Michael Cassidy, of Jennings, is the district attorney for the 31st Judicial District and will serve as the district attorney from the central area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

Paul Connick, of Gretna, is the district attorney for 24th Judicial District and will serve as the executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association’s designee, as required by executive order.

Jeremy Cryer, of Westlake, is the Westlake Chief of Police and will serve as the chief of police from the western area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

Colonel Mike Edmonson, of Baton Rouge, is the superintendent of State Police and will serve as the superintendent of the Department of Public Safety’s designee, as required by executive order.

Phil Haney, of New Iberia, is the district attorney for the 16th Judicial District and will serve as the district attorney from the eastern area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

Mike Knaps, of Baker, is the Baker Chief of Police and Marshal and will serve as the representative of a marshal or constable, as required by executive order.

Wayne Melancon, of Crowley, is the sheriff of Acadia Parish and will serve as the sheriff from the western area of Louisiana , as required by executive order.

Jack Strain, of Abita Springs, is the sheriff of St. Tammany Parish and will serve as the sheriff from the eastern area of Louisiana, as required by executive order.

 Hal Turner, of Baton Rouge, is the current executive director of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association and will serve on the board, as required by executive order.
