Brandon Romero, an 18-year-old Abbeville policeman, is recovering and does not seem to have head damage after the car he was driving was struck by an 18-wheeler last week.
Abbeville Police Chief Rick Coleman said Romero, who had only been a police officer for three months, spoke to his family Monday morning and remembered their names and who he was. He also ate for the first time.
Romero remains in the intensive care unit at a Lafayette hospital.
Romero was involved in a two-vehicle accident last week.
He was returning from New Iberia after transporting a prisoner to the New Iberia jail.
According to the State Police report, Romero crossed the eastbound lane of U.S. 90 at the intersection of Estes Road in Iberia Parish. He was struck by an 18-wheeler traveling eastbound on the highway.
Romero was in Abbeville’s only spare patrol car, Coleman said.
During each shift there are at least five patrol cars protecting Abbeville streets. If one had to go into the shop for repair, the transport unit would patrol.
