The two teams had won their respective district championships, going unbeaten against league foes.
Cecilia’s Lady Bulldogs breezed past Franklin in the first round of the playoffs, topping the St. Mary team 25-11, 25-9 and 25-15.
Cecilia, which entered the tournament seeded No. 9, lost a tough match to No. 8 St. Louis in the regional round by 25-14, 14-25, 16-25, 27-29.
St. Louis lost to No. 1 E.D. White in the quarterfinals and E.D. White went on to claim the state championship with wins over Lutcher in the semifinals and Sacred Heart in the title game.
Cecilia wrapped up its season at 20-9 overall.
Breaux Bridge
Breaux Bridge’s young team, which includes only three seniors, advanced all the way to the semifinals before falling to Sam Houston of Moss Bluff.
Coach Judy Romero’s squad opened the playoffs with an easy 25-14, 25-9, 27-25 win over district rival Northside.
Then things got a little tougher. The No. 4 Lady Tigers went against No. 6 Belle Chasse in the quarterfinal round, claiming victory in a match that stretched to five games. BB lost 25-18 in the first game, but bounced back with 25-15, 25-17 wins. Belle Chasse stayed in it by rallying to a 25-20 victory in game four, but the Lady Tigers prevailed 15-10 to claim the match.
Breaux Bridge faced No. 1 Sam Houston in the semifinals and played tough but finally fell to the Lady Broncos 3-1.
Sam Houston ended up losing the championship game to No. 2 seeded Cabrini.
Breaux Bridge finished one of its best seasons ever with a 21-5 overall records.
