Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle, who serves as chairman of the state Ground Water Resources Commission, will be visiting Breaux Bridge Middle School on Tuesday, March 10, to teach a lesson on ground water to an 8th grade science class. The class will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the event is open to the news media.

The awareness week is being sponsored by the Louisiana Ground Water Resources Commission in conjunction with the National Ground Water Association.

Angelle is taking time to teach the course not only to help some students better understand what ground water is and why it is important, but also to draw attention to the issues involved with conserving and protecting ground water.

“We use about 1.6 billion gallons of ground water every day in Louisiana, so there is no question that protecting that natural resource is critical,” Angelle said. “One thing in our favor in protecting our ground water is that conservation is something every one can do. We want to make sure all citizens of the state, young and old, know they can help.”

Throughout the week, the Department of Natural Resources will be providing information on protection of ground water and best practices for making use of it, and reaching out through schools to help in the effort.
