LAKE ARTHUR – With inclement weather postponing nearly every prep sporting event in the Acadiana area last Friday, a few local track teams began their track seasons Monday at the Jennings Bulldog Relays.

Iota’s Lady Bulldogs earned the highest finish on the girls’ side, placing fourth with 62 points. Jennings won the meet with 80 points followed by Iowa (77) and Merryville (67).

Church Point placed fourth with 52 points while Rayne was tied for seventh (32) in the 10-team field.

Rayne’s Krystal Chevis took the spotlight for the local contingent, earning the Outstanding Track award for winning all three of her events. Chevis scored 30 of her team’s 32 points by placing first in the 100 (12.95), 200 (26.20) and 400-meter dashes (1:01.06).

Iota was paced by Dominiqua Thomas, Mackenzie Trahan and Kiara Landry, each with second-place showings in their respective events.

Thomas was second in the 400-meter dash behind Chevis with a time of 1:03.98 while Trahan was runnerup in the 3200 (15:29.00). Landry finished second in the high jump behind Church Point’s Shalen Handy. Both had jumps of 5-0, but Handy won the event with fewer misses. Handy also placed second in the triple jump (35-5.5).

Thomas joined Marjanee Bias, Laura Cart and Celena Bobbett to take second in the 4x200 relay before teamming with Cart, Landry and Anna Lege to take second in the 4x400 relay.

Church Point’s LaDash Bellard placed second in the 800-meter run (2:47.55); Mariah Louvierre was second in the pole vault (7-6) and Jalisa Citizen was second in the shot put (31-5).

On the boys’ side, Church Point finished third with 61 points behind meet champion Jennings (109) and runnersup Kinder (85). Rayne finished fifth (46) and Iota was seventh (37).

Torey Boudreaux and Caleb Stanford paced the Bears in the field events. Boudreaux won the shot put (42-0) and Stanford won the pole vault (13-0). Iota’s Tyler Leger also jumped 13-0 in the pole vault but finished second due to misses.

Church Point’s relay teams were also impressive. Dylan Matte, Demarsho Wright, Joseph Carriere and Von Duplechin teamed up to win the 4x100 relay (45.85) before Matte, Carriere and Wright were joined by Linus Hagger to take second in the 4x200 relay. Hagger, Wright, Carriere and Duplechin closed the meet in style by winning the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:44.29.

Rayne’s John Reynolds placed second in the 1600-meter run (4:58.39) and the 3200 (11:25.00) while Andrew Wynn was second in the 400-meter dash (54.57) and third in the 100 (11.46). Philip Richard also placed second in the shot put (41-1). Wynn also teamed with Antonio Wheeler, Reginald Guidry and Quincy Rochester to take third in the 4x200 relay (1:37.10).

Iota’s Daniel Scott logged a first-place showing in the high jump (5-10) and Jack Pinson was third in the shot put (39-1).
