Oak Forest Academy hosted a week long presentation named "Spiritual Emphasis Week" from Monday, March 30 through Friday, April 3. This was a participate if you like event in which students were allowed to attend at their own will. It was provided for the high school and junior high. Each day consisted of a 45 minute assembly, class room visits and when needed, teacher in-service meetings.

The chosen speaker was Rick Hughes affectionately called by the students "Big Rick". Hughes, "challenges the sensibilities and intellect of students with a down to earth, common sense, non-emotional appeal . . . simply by providing accurate information based on age old Biblical truths!"

According to the information provided "Big Rick" applies spiritual solutions for students that are faced with confusion at home, school and world events as most students are plagued with just such problems.

"Big Rick's" objective is to provide clear information explaining the truths that can found in God's Holy Word. This information has been known to help students understand how to succeed in today's environment. This course apparently makes it easier for students to grasp a fresh understanding of God's will for their lives and how to have a proper relationship with God.

Rick has conducted over 5,000 Student Ministry Programs from Michigan to Mississippi since 1969. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in a single parent home. His athletic talent surfaced in high school and he excelled in track. He participated and set records in shot put and discus. He also excelled in football. For his dedication and persistence in athletics he was awarded a four year scholarship with the University of Alabama.

Rick married his wife Lydia Lucas of Baton Rouge in 1967. They have four children and live in Cropwell, Alabama, where he enjoys bass fishing.
