The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the murder of an Evangeline Parish man, who was shot by his father Monday, April 20.

Captain Keith Dupre, chief of detectives, said the sheriff’s office received a call at 9:56 p.m. from a man, who claimed to have shot his son. Deputies arrived on the scene at 1032 Lanse Prien Noir Road, located west of Mamou, along with First Responders and Acadian Ambulance. He said Michael Bushnell Jr., 19 (dob 7-15-89), was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Sgt. Shane Guillory and Sgt. Travis Basco were the first deputies on the scene,” Dupre said.

The deputies secured the crime scene and took photographs until Dupre and Detective Kevin Tate arrived on the scene and took the evidence into custody.

Dupre said at least three shots were fired by the senior Bushnell at the younger Bushnell, fatally wounding him.

Michael Bushnell Sr., the father, was taken to the parish jail and booked on second-degree murder charges. His bond was set at $500,000.

The Gazette attempted to reach Deborah Bushnell, mother of the younger Bushnell, who is estranged from her husband, the senior Bushnell. Deborah reported to KATC-TV 3 she and her husband had been separated. She told reporters her son was employed at Wal-Mart in Eunice and was expecting his first child in July with his girlfriend.
