Umemployment insurance claims increase

BATON ROUGE – Initial claims for unemployment insurance for the week ending July 25, 2009, increased to 5,033 from last week’s total of 4,879. Initial claims were above the comparable week ending July 26, 2008 figure of 3,765.

The four week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,859 from the previous ending July 26, 2008, figure of 3,765.

Continued unemployment insurance weeks claimed for the week ending July 25m 2009 increased to 64,151 from the previous weeks total of 62,387. The largest increase in continued claims was in the Transportation Equipment industry. Continued weeks claimed were above the comparable week ending July 26, 2008, figure of 30,547.

The four-week moving average of continued weeks claimed increased to 61, 841 from the previous week’s average of 60,679.
