CROWLEY - Longtime Crowley librarian Ann Mire was quick with her research and a response in regards to a Post Scripts Tuesday inquiring about the origin and date of the Edwin Edwards monument that is on the grounds of the Acadia Parish Courthouse.

Mire came to the offices of the Post-Signal with a photo of the dedication from the Crowley Post-Signal and also an article from the Crowley Daily Signal.

A photo of Edwards at the unveiling was published on Sunday, May 13, 1973 of the event that took place Friday, May 11. The caption under the photo said Mayor Joe Gielen unveiled the plaque in the presence of Edwards and his brother Marion, wife Elaine and mother.

The Daily Signal article also said that while Governor Edwards was in town he announced the approval of a $1.5 million Vocational-Technical School here in Crowley. The Crowley school was touted as one in a newly-launched vocational-technical training program for Louisiana with an initial capital outlay of $52.4 million.

As for the marker, Gordon Dore served as master of ceremonies for the event and Rep. John N. John offered remarks in addition to Governor Edwards. The marker, citing the first person from Acadia Parish to become governor of the state, was constructed and placed on the courthouse grounds through funds provided by friends of Governor Edwards from Acadia Parish.

Recently, the marker had the bust of Governor Edwards taken and members of the Acadia Parish Police Jury want to replace it.
