BATON ROUGE – Notre Dame sophomore Ali Lucas and teammate Courtney Champ made history last week, becoming the school’s first girls’ golf team to qualify for the state golf tournament which will be held in Zachary beginning Wednesday.

Lucas, who missed qualifying for the state tournament a year ago by just one stroke, was this year’s regional champion after shooting a 79 at the LSU Golf Course in Baton Rouge.

Her low round was the top score in Division II (Class AAA and below), which includes three regions from the state with over 80 participants.

She was also fourth overall in both divisions, with Division One being comprised of golfers in Class 4A and 5A. Of the three golfers to top her round, two have already signed college scholarships.

Lucas and Camp will depart Crowley Monday for a practice round at Zachary’s Copper Mill Gold Club before beginning the two-day tournament on Tuesday.

Camp, who has been playing golf for just two months, qualified for the event by carding a 123 at the regional.
