The last hour of Dwayne Lewis’ 27-year life began with violence and ended in it.

Police arrested Allen Michael Frank, 20, of Eunice on a charge of 1st-degree murder in Lewis’ death.

Frank was arrested shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday at his mother’s Eunice residence.

Police received a call at 7:34 p.m. Monday saying a shooting had occurred on South Beulah and that the victim wasn’t breathing.

According to detectives, responding officers and ambulance personnel found Lewis dead of a gunshot wound to his back and after investigation obtained a warrant for Frank.

Since the investigation continues, the department is releasing no further details.

But the public record indicates what may have been the underlying cause of the shooting.

Lewis, no stranger to the police department, was involved in a disturbance behind the department building about 6:15 p.m. He allegedly beat a woman who, the record indicates, was taken to the hospital by family members.

About 7:30, Frank, among a group, encountered him at 241 South Beulah and caught up with him in the back yard, and allegedly fired several shots at Lewis, residents in the area say.

They said the suspect fired several times, but it is unclear how many shots were fired or hit Lewis.

Detectives would not say whether one incident was related to the other or how many shots were fired or what kind of gun was involved.
